Sporting
Letterewe is a magnificent sporting estate stretching over four deer forests and offers our guests the unique chance to experience true Highland stalking over this unspoiled land. There is an abundance of wild brown trout fishing on the estate’s many hill lochs and in doing so, you will enjoy some of the most breathtaking scenery in the British Isles.
Trout Fishing
There are many wonderful hill lochs available to fish on Letterewe Estate.
Fionn Loch (The White Loch) is considered to be one of the best wild brown trout lochs in the area.
There is catch and release policy on Fionn Loch, Loch Maree and Loch Kernsary. All salmon and sea trout should be returned.
On a good day you could have a basket of 20 or more trout in excess of half a pound. The fishing experience on Fionn Loch is further enhanced by the remoteness and the superb mountain scenery.
Fishing on Loch Garbhaig with the rugged views of Slioch, possible sightings of red deer, golden eagle and excellent brown trout fishing from the bank guarantees to make the one and a half hours walk from Letterewe Lodge well worthwhile.
There are many other smaller lochs which can provide an excellent days fishing from the bank.
Fishing is possible from the banks of most of the lochs, but you can also fish from boats with one of the estate’s friendly keepers. Fly fishing is the tradition of the estate and the keepers are happy to teach beginners the rudiments. Spinning is allowed on the smaller hill lochs.
Stalking
The Scottish Highlands are home to the Red Deer where they live in their natural habitat among the wild, rugged hills and mountains. Red Deer are the largest wild deer in the UK and one of our native species. Deer stalking in Scotland has centuries of history and tradition behind it. As part of the estate’s management programme a certain number of deer are culled each year, to ensure that a healthy herd is maintained.
Letterewe Estate has also maintained the tradition of using Highland ponies to retrieve stalked deer home to the larder to be prepared for collection by the venison dealer. A day on the hill can be a truly memorable experience in the company of your professional stalker, ghillies and ponies.
The Red Deer open season is from 1 July until 20 October. However, at Letterewe the stalking generally starts at the end of August.
