Leuchie was listed in The Times as one of the top 25 stylish UK stays – one of the “coolest holiday houses”!
Leuchie Walled Garden offers contemporary luxury and exceptional comfort for up to 12 guests. Guests can relax in comfort surrounded by an outstanding collection of antique furniture, paintings and books. The huge glass walls let the outside in, flooding the rooms with natural light and offering delicious views of the garden.
The property is an outstanding example of a stylish 1960’s mid-century modern house. Now completely renovated to accommodate contemporary standards of luxury, the property boasts a unique blend of modernity with traditional architecture.
Leuchie was designed by the renowned Scottish architect, Sir James Dunbar-Nasmith who went on to design the Edinburgh Festival theatre. Sir James designed a house that fully embraces the concepts that were fashionable in the 1960s, using striking angles, glass & timber. The completed building sits naturally within the traditional brickwork of the walled garden.
The magnificent walled garden was built over 200 years ago by Napoleonic prisoners of war. Against a backdrop of enchanting borders and ancient trees, it is a place of beauty and calm whatever the season.
The Walled Garden is in two parts. The garden in front of the Modern House is for the exclusive use of guests; guests are also welcome to wander around the kitchen garden and the surrounding grounds. There is a patio furniture and a dining table and chairs on the paved area. Croquet and boules are available for the use of guests. There is a pitching range in the Kitchen Garden if guests are keen golfers. There is also a wonderful tennis court, and a separate games room with snooker table and table tennis.
The house is one mile from the popular seaside town of North Berwick and all its restaurants and facilities. The town is regularly voted best place to live in Scotland. It is close to several sandy beaches including Seacliffe (often nominated as one of Britain’s best beaches), Yellowcraig & the East & West Bays in North Berwick.
For golfers, the names North Berwick & East Lothian reverberate around the world. Famous for its historic courses, stunning views and as host of the Scottish Open, East Lothian is known as Scotland’s Golf Coast. There are 12 courses within 20 minutes of Leuchie’s front door and boasts no less than 21 golf courses, including Muirfield, Archerfield, Gullane, Luffness and North Berwick.
Something else which makes Leuchie Walled Garden unique is the opportunity to make an exclusive landing on Bass Rock. Weather permitting, the owner can arrange for trips around the Bass Rock, whose 150,000 gannets David Attenborough described as “one of the 12 wonders of the natural world”. Also nearby are the islands of Craigleith, famous for its seals and puffins, and Fidra, as well as Aberlady Nature Reserve and the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick.Leuchie is situated just outside the small fishing town of North Berwick, nestled within a beautiful old walled garden and is quite simply stunning. The garden is completely secure for children. There is also a tennis court, as well as croquet and boules, for you to enjoy. Something quite unique about this property is that the owner “owns” Bass Rock and, weather permitting, he can arrange a trip out to visit. There is a train station in North Berwick and only 30 minutes journey into the centre of Edinburgh. For walkers and cyclists, there are numerous coastal walks. Leuchie is also close to the John Muir Way, while half an hour away the Lammermuirs offer moorland walks with stunning views over East Lothian and the Borders.
There is also plenty to see in the rest of East Lothian including the county town of Haddington and villages like Stenton, nestling in the foothills of the Lammermuirs. Or go to the beach in Gullane and then have lunch at Tom Kitchen’s award winning restaurant, the Bonnie Badger.
Edinburgh is just 35 minutes by the hourly train service from North Berwick. A day trip from Leuchie would enable you to visit the numerous attractions, such as Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, the National Museum of Scotland and the Royal Yacht Britannia. Alternatively, shop in Princes Street and enjoy the numerous restaurants and bars in George Street. It is also an excellent base for the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe. Enjoy a peaceful morning in the garden then head up to see the shows; Scotrail put on extra late trains so you can still get home at midnight.
For complete relaxation, special occasions and get-togethers, you may wish to consider a catered service. This can include full catering or the occasional evening meal as well as meals delivered to your holiday home just ready to pop into the oven.
The house and garden are child friendly. There is a cot available.
